Day 1 – Wednesday, November 4, 2009 USA - Frankfurt
Board your international flight to Germany.
Day 2 – Thursday, November 5, 2009 Frankfurt – Rothenburg
After arrival in Frankfurt your tour director will meet and guide you to your transfer motor coach. You will drive to Rothenburg, a perfectly preserved townfrom the middle ages. Welcome dinner at your hotel where you will meet the other participants of your tour. (D)
Day 3 – Friday, November 6, 2009 Rothenburg - Eisenach
Morning on your own to explore Rothenburg with its small cobble stone streets, half-timbered houses, towers and the city wall. Early afternoon we will cross the border into the former East Germany and drive to Eisenach, the birth town of J.S.Bach and home of Wartburg Castle. (B, D)
Day 4 – Saturday, November 7, 2009 Excursion to Observation Point Alpha
Your destination today is the Observation Point Alpha and the Border Museum in Rhoen. You can experience firsthand how the border was “perfected” from preventing any escapes. Nearby “Point Alpha” was of strategic importance to the Western Allies due to the assumption that a confrontation with the East would start here at the “Fulda Gap”. Return to Eisenach for overnight. Day 5 – Sunday, November 8, 2009 Eisenach – Leipzig
From Eisenach drive along the former transit route to Leipzig. A local guide will take you for a sightseeing tour of Leipzig which includes the St.Thomas Church where Bach worked as a organist for many years and the Nikolai Church where the peace movement in East Germany started. (B, D)
Day 6 – Monday, November 9, 2009 Leipzig – Berlin
First stop this morning is Wittenberg. Explore this town on your own which became famous through the Reformer Martin Luther. After lunch (on your own) depart to Berlin. Arrive in Berlin on this historic day where exactly 20 years ago the border opened for citizens of East Germany. (B, D)
Day 7 – Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Berlin
This morning you will meet your local guide for a city sightseeing tour of Berlin. Among Berlin's many historical treasures are majestic Charlottenburg Palace, the Victory Column, the Reichstag, home of Germany’s parliament and the Schoeneberger Rathaus, site of John F. Kennedy’s moving "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. One of the highlights is your drive along the boulevard "Unter den Linden." Starting at the Brandenburg Gate and ending at Alexanderplatz, pass famous buildings such as the State Opera House, the Humboldt University and the Cathedral. Your guide will also point out the former headquarter of the Stasi (East Germany’s secret service) and the area of Pankow were the political leadership of East Germany used to live. Your tour ends with a visit of the Wall Museum at the former Check Point Charlie. (B)
Day 8 – Wednesday, November 11, 2009 Berlin (Potsdam excursion)
Excursion to Potsdam. Potsdam was famous for being the headquarter of the KGB in Germany. Today it is a very charming town. You will return via the Glienicker Bridge where spectacular exchanges of spies took place, the most famous one in 1962 (Powers/Abel). The afternoon is free for individual activities such as shopping or to visit one of Berlin’s famous museums. (B)
Day 9 – Thursday, November 12, 2009 Berlin - USA
Today it is time to say “Auf Wiedersehen” when you board your motor coach to the airport for your return flight to the U.S. (B)
